Birkebeinerrennet 2010: 54km and no hint of a track

22 Mar

Lovely example why I won’t do the Birkebeinerrennet.  Bad behaviour up, bad behaviour down. People herringboning where diagonal-going is the right technique and people snowploughing where they should be sitting and relaxing in the track and enjoying the glide down the hill. The end result is 54km of trackless slush. The organisers should probably consider making the race a bit earlier in the year as well.

I did a Birkenprøven or “Testbirken” the 6th of March and couldn’t be happier. Fishboned once on the last steep just before Midtfjellet and snowploughed once to brake to take my skis off when crossing the bare asphalt at Sjøsetervegen.

Heartfelt congratulations to those who did it Saturday. I had it easy, you didn’t.
